The Smith in the City trip is a fantastic opportunity for Smith students to gain initial exposure to various companies and business cultures. In the fall, students have the opportunity to travel to NYC for two full days of networking and company visits, while in the spring, they can head to D.C. for one jam-packed Friday Students are split up into eight tracks based on career interests: Accounting, Business Analytics, Consulting, Fashion, Finance, Entrepreneurship, International Business, and Marketing. Each track has their own set of companies to visit so that students can explore a variety of fields that closely align with their career goals, meet and network with professionals and Smith alumni, and gain relevant insights into the lives of business professionals.
Jake Orbach, a senior Information Systems major, attended Smith in the City: New York last year on the Business Analytics Track. After participating in the 2017 program, Jake has some advice for students hoping to attend this year.
“Take everything in,” he says. “Don’t just ask questions during site visits with companies; connect with them on LinkedIn and maintain that relationship beyond the visit.”
Jake says that the most important thing he learned on the trip was how to network better. The New York trip’s jam-packed itinerary includes many opportunities to connect with local professionals, including an open networking reception on Thursday night. While preparation from Smith Start and club events helped give him confidence, Jake notes how Smith In The City reinforces the importance of keeping strong connections.
He observes, “…to get into these businesses, you don’t just need to know what you’re doing – you need to know the right people.” That’s exactly what Smith in the City strives to help students do.
Smith in the City: New York 2018 will take place from Thursday, Oct. 25th to Friday, Oct. 26th. Applications open on September 9th, 2018 so look out! Follow SUSA on Facebook and Instagram for more information.
